It combines a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a 44.2kW electric motor to produce 227 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A 1.49kWh battery helps FWD Sportage Hybrid models achieve an EPA-estimated 43 mpg in combined city/highway driving or an estimated 38 mpg when equipped with Active AWD and center-locking differential (standard in EX and SX Prestige models).

A 13.8-kWh battery pack enables an estimated electric-only range of 34 miles. The Sportage Plug-in Hybrid is easy to live with and doesn't require special charging equipment to make the most of its electric range. It can fully replenish its battery in 6-7 hours using a standard 3-prong household power outlet. However, connecting to Level 2 charging equipment reduces charging time to ~2 hours.
